Initially, the issue appeared consistent with several common web application problems, including PHP processing failures, MIME-type misconfiguration, corrupted cache output, .htaccess configuration issues, or other server-side application problems.

Multiple hosting and security support teams reviewed file permissions, PHP handlers, server configuration, WordPress caching behavior, application integrity, and .htaccess rules, yet no direct application-level issue could initially be identified.

Identifying the Trigger

Further testing eventually isolated the issue to requests made using AI-related User-Agent strings such as:

Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko); compatible; ChatGPT-User/1.0; +https://openai.com/bot

When requests containing “ChatGPT” in the User-Agent string reached the origin environment, the hosting platform returned the following type of response:

HTTP/2 200 OK
Content-Type: application/octet-stream
Content-Length: 1

Rather than serving standard HTML content, the server intentionally returned a nearly empty binary response.

This behavior was later confirmed to be part of the hosting provider’s AI crawler blocking system.

Cross-Platform Investigation & Resolution

As the issue continued appearing across multiple production websites, LFT Agency began correlating common infrastructure patterns between the affected environments. Each site utilized a similar hosting, firewall, and CDN configuration involving SiteGround hosting and the Sucuri Website Firewall.

Working directly with both SiteGround and Sucuri support teams, LFT Agency assisted in reproducing the issue, testing crawler-specific responses, isolating AI-related User-Agent behavior, validating CDN cache interactions, reviewing HTTP response headers, and identifying how AI crawler blocking behavior was interacting with firewall caching systems.

Further testing ultimately confirmed that requests containing AI-related User-Agent strings such as “ChatGPT” were receiving intentionally truncated responses from the hosting environment, which were then occasionally cached by the CDN/firewall layer and served publicly.

Following continued escalation and testing between all parties, AI crawler blocking rules were adjusted for the affected environments, resolving the recurring caching conflict.

The CDN & Firewall Caching Conflict

The issue became significantly more problematic when the firewall/CDN layer interpreted the response as cacheable content.

The resulting sequence became:

  1. AI crawler requests reached the website
  2. The hosting environment returned an intentionally truncated binary response
  3. The firewall/CDN cached the invalid response
  4. Subsequent visitors were served the cached binary output instead of the actual homepage

This effectively caused legitimate visitors to receive blank pages, forced file downloads, and invalid homepage responses until the CDN cache was manually cleared.

Because the response still returned:

HTTP 200 OK

rather than a proper:

403 Forbidden

the firewall incorrectly treated the response as valid cacheable content.
